After electricity and hydrogen, another new energy source, methanol, is attracting the attention of all parties, including car companies.
On September 1, the first global methanol economy forum was held in Shanxi, China, where the International Renewable Energy Agency, head enterprises, and expert representatives gathered to discuss the future of the methanol economy. Participants generally agreed that methanol, which has the characteristics of "low-carbon oxygen and hydrogen-rich", has a promising application in the new energy vehicle track, but there are still obstacles to overcome.
China's new energy advantages of methanol attracts attention from all sides. With a hydrogen content of 12.5% and oxygen content of 50%, methanol has the characteristics of efficient combustion, clean emission and renewable. Meanwhile, methanol is liquid at room temperature and pressure, which makes it safer and more convenient in storage, transportation and use, and is recognized as one of the new clean and renewable fuels in the industry.
China's Energy Transition: Towards Carbon Neutrality, published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences 2021, suggests that methanol can effectively combine hydrogen, carbon cycle, electric energy replacement and fuel replacement technologies to become an important link in the application of carbon neutrality.
Methanol is expanding its application in the field of new energy vehicles, "There are already sports cars in the world that use 100% methanol. Why is it a sports car? It's because methanol molecules have oxygen, and when it's burning, oxygen is released from the inside, and when you step on it, it has better explosive power than diesel." Liu Ke, director of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Southern University of Science and Technology, said.
The energy efficiency performance of methanol is leading in auto fuel, the calorific value ratio of methanol to gasoline is about 2.2:1. According to the pilot operation data of methanol vehicles from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, methanol vehicles can improve energy efficiency by about 21% compared with gasoline vehicles, while CO2 emissions can be reduced by about 26%.
Geely recently delivered the world's first methanol hybrid car, equipped with the industry's leading methanol hybrid power system, 100 km alcohol consumption of about 9.2 liters, equivalent to the cost of fuel cars 100 km fuel consumption of 3 liters, spending less than 0.3 yuan per kilometer, in reducing emissions while also saving the cost of use. In addition to pushing the methanol technology route Geely, FAW, YUTONG, SHACMAN, BAIC and other enterprises have also developed their own methanol vehicles.
On March 28, the methanol cars and long-range methanol heavy trucks developed and produced by Geely Holding Group opened the test and demonstration run in Aalborg, Denmark, which is the first methanol car running and also is one of the important initiatives to implement energy transformation in Denmark and promote green methanol as a strategic fuel for green transformation in Europe, which also heralds that methanol will play an important role in promoting global transportation carbon neutrality. On the same day, Danish Transport Minister Trine Bramsen refilled Geely methanol cars with methanol and took a test ride on the long-range methanol truck. She said: Green methanol vehicles will have a huge impact on Denmark's climate and environment, and will even change the whole world.
